Childhood
Therin was born and raised near Farmington, New Mexico on a 10 acre ranch. His family recreationally raised horses, pigs, chickens and the occasional goat, but mostly they just enjoyed the elbow room of living away from the city. Therin is the 5th of seven children. He learned the value of hard work both on the ranch and working for his father’s business. His father owned a diesel mechanic shop in town and specialized in repairing diesel fuel injection systems and turbos on pickups and semi trucks. The business serviced the booming oil field industry in the area. Therin grew up working there sweeping floors and washing down machines as a young boy and worked up the ranks to a trusted mechanic by the time he graduated from high school.
professional experience
After high school Therin served a church mission in the Utah Salt Lake City Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After serving there he went to Ricks College where he got a degree in Welding Engineering Technology. Therin and Jenny met and got married during this time and after working in California for a short spell they returned to Rexburg so he could work on another degree this time in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. He then transferred to BYU Provo where he finished his bachealors degree. Therin worked his way through college working as a welder, a machinist and a fabricator for several manufacturing companies as he took classes. This enabled him to graduate debt free with no finanial support from family. After graduating, the College of Engineering offered Therin a full-time job managing a product development laboratory. His team specializes in developing, engineering, and manufacturing prototype products for all campus departments, for both research and facility maintenance. Therin is now the Director of Transportation and Manufacturing Services where he continues to oversee this work in addition to overseeing the procurement of and repairs on BYU’s fleet of 600 vehicles and the maintenance of ~2500 pieces of grounds equipment from mowers on up to front end loaders and semi trucks.
Volunteerism
Therin and Jenny settled here in Mapleton after living in Springville for 6 years. He quickly got involved coaching his three boys’ city league basketball teams, helping with church youth leadership and other community events. Then one day Therin answered a request from Police Chief Jackson for anyone who was certified in FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Therin had gotten certified years earlier. The chief asked Therin to come in and meet with him. After the interview, Therin was asked to serve as the Mapleton CERT program director and to revitalize the program for the city. Therin agreed and commenced to bring volunteers together and to create training courses each Spring and Fall. With the help of other volunteers they were able to train over 50 people over three years. Therin worked with many citizens as well as Mapleton’s Fire and EMS personnel. Through his contact with the public safety personnel, Therin realized the EMS was understaffed and soon began volunteering as an ambulance driver. The pre-hospital medicine life got under his skin and soon he was certified as an EMT. After a year volunteering as an EMT. Therin worked to earn his Advanced EMT certification. As the city council saw a need to blend the EMT and Fire services, Therin eagerly applied for firefighter training and spent the next 5 years earning all the needed fire certifications. He currently serves as a fully certified volunteer AEMT/Firefighter.
In 2015 Therin accepted the appointment to serve on Mapleton’s Planning Commission and began to formally lend his voice and experience in civic service. Some of the issues of import that Therin evaluates and makes recommendations for are: local land use policy, zoning policy and impacts of accessory apartments and home businesses.
As a Planning Commissioner, Therin displayed the ability to dialogue with hundreds of community members. He heard heartfelt entreaties about dozens of impactful issues, weighed merit versus detriment and maked recommendations to the City Council. Now in his second term as a City Council Member, Therin has an abundance of additional experience and knows the city issues well.
Therin’s life experience and abundant dedication to service is exemplary. Therin is an exceptional candidate for Mayor. Please support his candidacy and cast your vote for him. And, don’t forget to mail in your ballots!!!
